"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "My request was to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only a key snag: The sender also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're far from alone. A host of high-profile admirers have publicly begged for the role.

The evidence suggests a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the best ensembles, they're a tight-knit unit. Their videos repeatedly show them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That's the biggest honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate others to make music."

"So anyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Award Nod

The trio are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination resonates with the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project emerged from a period of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes detail breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That developed confidence required a fresh approach – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The trio's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

One man ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Legacy

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international audience.

However Haim will consistently be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
