Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
