A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
