Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural management.
